Prime Minister Carney Marks 11 Years Since the Attack at the National War Memorial and on Parliament Hill

Carney honours Corporal Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, reflecting on unity, courage, and Canada’s resilience

Ottawa, Ontario – Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a solemn statement today marking the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attacks at the National War Memorial and on Parliament Hill — an event that deeply shook the nation but ultimately reaffirmed Canada’s unity and strength.

On October 22, 2014, Corporal Nathan Cirillo was killed while standing guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, an act of selfless duty and national service. Two days earlier, Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent lost his life in a related attack in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Québec.

Prime Minister Carney paid tribute to both men and their families, noting that the anniversary remains a reminder of their bravery and sacrifice.

“We honour their service and their sacrifices, and we hold their families, friends, and colleagues in the Canadian Armed Forces close to our hearts,” said Carney. “These attacks were meant to divide us and strike fear into every Canadian. They failed.”

The Prime Minister highlighted the courage of first responders and everyday Canadians who acted selflessly during the crisis. Their resolve, he said, demonstrated the nation’s enduring commitment to the values of freedom, solidarity, and unity that define Canada.

Carney concluded his statement by inviting all Canadians to take a moment of reflection — to remember Corporal Cirillo and Warrant Officer Vincent and to express gratitude to the women and men in uniform who continue to protect and serve across the country.
