Mark Carney–Emmanuel Macron G7 talks focus on security, energy, and global economic stability

Ottawa, Ontario — Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke Friday with French President Emmanuel Macron, as Canada concludes its Presidency of the G7 and prepares for France to assume leadership of the forum in 2026.

During the call, President Macron congratulated Prime Minister Carney on Canada’s successful G7 Presidency in 2025. The leaders reviewed key outcomes achieved under Canada’s leadership, including efforts to strengthen collective security, bolster global energy security, accelerate the digital transition, and reinforce the resilience of the global economy amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.

The discussion also focused on the transition to France’s G7 Presidency next year. Prime Minister Carney and President Macron exchanged views on the challenges facing the international community and reaffirmed the G7’s continued relevance as a forum for cooperation in a more fragmented global environment.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of pragmatic collaboration with international partners to safeguard macroeconomic stability and advance cooperation in strategic areas such as critical minerals, artificial intelligence, and energy security.

Prime Minister Carney and President Macron agreed to remain in close and regular contact as Canada and France continue to work together through multilateral institutions and bilateral partnerships.

Canada’s 2025 G7 Presidency formally concluded on December 19, 2025, with France set to assume the G7 Presidency on January 1, 2026.
