Prime Minister Carney and Chinese Premier Li Qiang Commit to Deepening Canada-China Relations
New York City, United States – Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Premier of China Li Qiang on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, signalling renewed momentum in the Canada-China relationship.
The two leaders acknowledged the importance of ongoing dialogue and emphasized their commitment to further engagement, including at the highest levels of government. Their discussion built on recent progress, following the Canada-China Joint Economic and Trade Commission meeting in August. That session, held in Canada, marked an important step toward revitalizing bilateral trade ties.

Prime Minister Carney and Premier Li addressed areas of mutual interest while also recognizing the sensitivities each country faces. Agriculture and agri-food products, including canola, were among the specific issues discussed, alongside seafood exports and the rapidly evolving electric vehicle (EV) sector. Both leaders underscored the value of constructive dialogue to resolve challenges and strengthen cooperation.
The meeting highlighted shared recognition that balanced trade and respectful economic cooperation remain critical to advancing prosperity for both countries.
Looking ahead, Prime Minister Carney and Premier Li agreed to remain in close contact and expressed interest in holding a subsequent leaders’ meeting, further advancing bilateral ties.
