Carney Meets Latvian Prime Minister Siliņa, Extends NATO Mission
Leaders reaffirm Canada–Latvia partnership, trade co-operation, and commitment to Ukraine
RIGA, LATVIA — Prime Minister Mark Carney met today with Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa to reaffirm Canada’s deepening partnership with Latvia and to highlight shared priorities in security, trade, and innovation.
Strengthening Canada–Latvia Relations
Carney and Siliņa emphasized the strength of the Canada–Latvia bilateral relationship, noting opportunities to expand economic collaboration in artificial intelligence, aerospace, and defence production. Both leaders underlined that economic growth in Europe depends on lasting peace and security.

Shared Security and NATO Partnership
The prime ministers reiterated their commitment to NATO’s collective defence, stressing the importance of ending Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and securing a just and lasting peace supported by credible security guarantees.
Prime Minister Carney announced the extension of Operation REASSURANCE, Canada’s largest active overseas military mission, which deploys approximately 2,000 Canadian Armed Forces members in Latvia. He thanked the Latvian government and people for their hospitality toward Canadian troops and for supporting NATO’s multinational presence in the region.
A Continued Commitment
Both leaders agreed to remain in regular contact as Canada and Latvia continue to advance shared goals of regional security, economic co-operation, and stronger transatlantic partnerships.
