Prime Minister Carney Commemorates Komagata Maru Tragedy with Call to Conscience

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a solemn statement on Friday marking the anniversary of the Komagata Maru tragedy, one of the darkest episodes in Canada’s immigration history. The 1914 incident, in which 376 South Asian passengers were denied entry into Canada and forced to return to India, remains a symbol of the country’s exclusionary immigration policies of the early 20th century.

“The Komagata Maru tragedy is a stark reminder of how, in moments of our history, Canada fell short of the values we hold dear,” Carney stated.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the deep injustice faced by the passengers, who were predominantly of Sikh, Muslim, and Hindu faiths. Upon their arrival in Vancouver’s harbour, they were denied entry based on discriminatory immigration laws and detained aboard the ship for two months without adequate food, water, or medical care.

“We cannot rewrite the past, but we must confront it; to act with purpose, to ensure that such injustices are never repeated,” Carney said.

The Komagata Maru was eventually forced to return to India, where many passengers were arrested or killed upon arrival. The Prime Minister’s statement framed the commemoration not only as a reflection on Canada’s past but as a call to action for building a more inclusive and equitable future.

“Let this solemn anniversary serve as a call of remembrance and conscience,” Carney said. “To honour the past is to learn from it, and to learn from it is to act.”

The Komagata Maru incident has been formally recognized in the House of Commons, and previous governments have issued apologies, including an official apology delivered in Parliament in 2016. Carney’s statement continues that tradition while emphasizing the ongoing need to defend inclusion as a lived and practised value.
