Carney King Abdullah Call Focuses on De-Escalation and Civilian Protection

CANBERRA — Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with King Abdullah II of Jordan on March 5 as tensions continue to rise across the Middle East following recent missile and drone attacks targeting civilians in the region.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders condemned the attacks attributed to the Iranian regime and discussed efforts to prevent further escalation while protecting civilians.

Canada Expresses Support for Jordan

During the call, Carney expressed Canada’s solidarity with Jordan and praised the country’s defensive efforts in response to the attacks.

Jordan, which shares borders with several conflict zones in the region, has played a significant role in maintaining regional stability and protecting civilians amid rising tensions.

The Prime Minister also thanked King Abdullah II for Jordan’s continued protection of the thousands of Canadians living in the country.

Assisting Canadians in the Region

Carney and the Jordanian monarch discussed ongoing efforts to support Canadians in the Middle East, including measures to help citizens leave areas affected by the growing conflict.

The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that Canadian officials are working closely with international partners and regional governments to assist citizens who may require evacuation or consular support.

Calls for De-Escalation and Diplomacy

Both leaders emphasized the importance of diplomacy to prevent the conflict from expanding further across the region.

Carney and King Abdullah II agreed that diplomatic engagement remains essential to avoiding a broader crisis, stressing that all parties must prioritize civilian protection and work toward long-term solutions addressing nuclear proliferation and terrorism.

The discussion also focused on potential avenues for de-escalation and renewed international cooperation aimed at stabilizing the region.

Canada–Jordan Relations

Canada and Jordan maintain a longstanding diplomatic relationship built on cooperation in security, humanitarian assistance, and regional stability efforts.

Jordan has historically played an important role in international diplomacy in the Middle East, including hosting refugees and supporting regional peace initiatives.

As tensions continue to evolve, Canadian officials say they remain engaged with regional partners, including Jordan, to support diplomatic solutions and ensure the safety of Canadians abroad.
