Carney, Japan’s PM Ishiba Pledge to Deepen Canada-Japan Partnership

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke Friday morning with Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru, reaffirming the strength of the Canada–Japan relationship and expressing a shared commitment to economic and security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

In a social media post following the conversation, Carney noted: “I spoke with Prime Minister @shigeruishiba this morning about building on the strong and long-lasting friendship between Canada and Japan. I look forward to the work ahead to expand economic and security opportunities for both of our nations.”

The two leaders discussed the importance of deepening trade, defence, and commercial ties between their countries. Carney also emphasized Canada’s role as a Pacific nation and reiterated the strategic importance of the Indo-Pacific to Canada’s foreign and economic policy.

Canada and Japan are key partners in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and maintain ongoing cooperation through regional security dialogues and multilateral institutions.

Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact as they work to advance shared priorities in the months ahead.
