Carney Meets German Chancellor Merz to Advance Critical Minerals Plan

Leaders discuss Canada’s role in energy supply chains, AI, and continued support for Ukraine

BERLIN, GERMANY – Prime Minister Mark Carney met today with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin to strengthen Canada–Germany co-operation on trade, energy, and security.

Advancing the Critical Minerals Action Plan

At the center of the discussions was the Critical Minerals Action Plan, endorsed by Canada and Germany at the G7 Summit earlier this year. Carney highlighted Canada’s readiness to develop and stockpile critical minerals essential for defence, clean energy, and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of diversifying trade and energy supply chains, noting Canada’s role as a reliable partner in helping Germany secure access to critical resources.

Shared Security Priorities

The meeting also addressed broader security challenges. Carney and Merz reaffirmed their commitment to long-term peace in Ukraine and Europe, underscoring the Coalition of the Willing’s ongoing work to support Ukraine.

They reiterated their backing for robust and credible security guarantees for Ukraine and welcomed close co-ordination with the United States on these efforts.

Canada–Germany Partnership

Germany is Canada’s largest EU trading partner, with two-way merchandise trade valued at more than $30 billion in 2024. Today’s meeting builds on a long-standing partnership that includes:

  • Co-operation on clean energy transition

  • Supply chain resilience for critical minerals

  • Alignment on NATO and G7 commitments

Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact to advance these priorities.
