Prime Minister Carney to Welcome Finland’s President to Canada
Finland President Stubb visit to strengthen defence, trade, and Arctic cooperation
OTTAWA, ON — Prime Minister Mark Carney will welcome the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, to Canada for an official visit from April 14 to 15, 2026, marking the first formal bilateral meeting between the two leaders.
The visit comes at a time of growing cooperation between Canada and Finland, with both countries strengthening ties across key sectors including defence, trade, energy, technology, and Arctic security.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, discussions during the visit will focus on expanding collaboration in strategic industries such as maritime development, critical minerals, aerospace, artificial intelligence, and quantum technologies.
Strengthening Arctic and Security Cooperation
The meeting will also build on Canada’s recent engagement with Nordic countries, as both leaders explore opportunities to enhance cooperation in the Arctic — a region of increasing geopolitical importance.
Areas of focus will include traditional defence and security, as well as emerging fields such as satellite systems and cyber communications.
The visit underscores Canada’s broader strategy to deepen relationships with trusted international partners amid evolving global challenges.
Growing Bilateral Relationship
Canada and Finland continue to maintain a strong and expanding economic partnership. In 2025, bilateral merchandise trade between the two countries reached approximately $2.4 billion, reflecting growing commercial ties.
The relationship was further strengthened in August 2025 with the Canada-Finland joint statement on a foreign and security policy strategic partnership, aimed at enhancing collaboration on global security and defence priorities.
Prime Minister’s Statement
Prime Minister Carney highlighted the importance of the upcoming visit in advancing shared priorities between the two nations.
“Canada and Finland have an immensely strong and growing relationship across defence, technology, energy, and trade,” Carney said.
“With shared interests, values, and a commitment to international security, I look forward to hosting President Stubb to deepen our partnership to create stability, security, and prosperity for both our peoples.”
Looking Ahead
President Stubb’s visit is expected to reinforce Canada’s engagement with Nordic allies and support broader efforts to diversify trade, attract investment, and strengthen international cooperation in an increasingly complex global environment.
