Carney to Visit Poland, Germany, and Latvia to Strengthen Trade and Security Partnerships
Prime Minister to advance co-operation on energy, critical minerals, and defence during three-day visit to Europe
OTTAWA, ON — Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to Poland, Germany, and Latvia from August 25 to 27, 2025, as part of Canada’s efforts to deepen ties with European allies and expand co-operation in trade, energy, and defence.
Building Stronger Economic and Security Partnerships
In Warsaw, Carney will meet with Polish leaders to advance the Canada–Poland strategic partnership, focusing on trade, energy, and defence collaboration. The Prime Minister will also hold talks with business leaders to promote new industrial partnerships in aerospace, energy, and defence.
Carney is expected to underscore Canada’s support for lasting peace in Ukraine, emphasizing that “no decisions about Ukraine should be taken without Ukraine and no decisions about Europe without Europe.”
Meeting with Germany’s Chancellor Merz
In Berlin, Carney will meet with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to strengthen economic ties and address shared security challenges. Discussions will include ways to secure resilient supply chains in energy and natural resources, particularly critical minerals, while encouraging new bilateral investment opportunities.
Germany is one of Canada’s most important trading partners: merchandise trade between the two countries reached $30.5 billion in 2024, making Germany Canada’s largest EU export market and sixth-largest trading partner globally.
Supporting NATO Allies in Latvia
The visit will conclude in Riga, where Carney will meet Latvian leaders to enhance trade relations, particularly in the defence sector. He will also visit Canadian Armed Forces members stationed as part of Operation REASSURANCE—Canada’s largest active overseas mission.
Canada currently deploys approximately 2,000 CAF members in Latvia, where it serves as the Framework Nation for NATO’s Multinational Brigade.
Prime Minister’s Statement
“As the world becomes more dangerous and divided, Canada is focused on strengthening and diversifying its international partnerships,” said Prime Minister Carney. “Canada is deepening co-operation on trade, energy, and defence with our long-standing European allies. Together, we will create greater security, stability, and prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic.”
