Prime Minister Carney Congratulates Japan’s New Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae
Canada and Japan to deepen cooperation in trade, clean energy, and defence partnerships
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney has congratulated Takaichi Sanae on becoming Japan’s new Prime Minister, reaffirming Canada’s commitment to advancing a modern and strategic partnership with one of its closest allies in the Indo-Pacific region.
In his statement, Prime Minister Carney highlighted Canada’s growing collaboration with Japan in key areas including critical minerals, clean energy, advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and defence cooperation. He emphasized that these shared priorities will strengthen both nations’ economies and support innovation, energy security, and regional stability.
“On behalf of Canadians, I congratulate Takaichi Sanae on becoming the new Prime Minister of Japan,” said Carney. “Canada and Japan are building new partnerships in trade, critical minerals, energy, advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and defence. I look forward to working with Prime Minister Takaichi to elevate our cooperation across key sectors and create opportunities for workers and businesses in both our nations.”

The Prime Minister also expressed gratitude to outgoing Japanese leader Ishiba Shigeru, acknowledging his leadership and service.
Canada and Japan share a longstanding diplomatic relationship, rooted in mutual respect, democratic values, and cooperation across economic, environmental, and security initiatives. Both countries are founding members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and are strengthening supply chain resilience through the Canada-Japan Energy Policy Dialogue and the G7 framework.
As both nations navigate a shifting global landscape, Carney reaffirmed that Canada’s Indo-Pacific engagement will remain anchored in partnerships that advance peace, prosperity, and shared democratic principles.
