Carney Joins Coalition of the Willing Virtual Meeting on Ukraine Support

Leaders reaffirm unity ahead of U.S.–Russia ceasefire talks in Alaska

OTTAWA, ON — Prime Minister Mark Carney participated today in a virtual meeting of the Coalition of the Willing to discuss ongoing support for Ukraine and preparations for upcoming U.S.–Russia ceasefire negotiations.

The meeting, co-chaired by U.K. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, brought together allied leaders including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. Vice President JD Vance.



Preparing for Ceasefire Negotiations

The Coalition welcomed the leadership of President Donald Trump and the United States in advancing peace efforts, with formal ceasefire talks scheduled for Friday, August 15, 2025, in Anchorage, Alaska. Leaders emphasized the importance of ensuring any agreement is shaped by Ukraine and safeguards its sovereignty.

Shared principles reaffirmed by participants included:

  • Decisions on Ukraine’s future must be made by Ukrainians.

  • International borders cannot be changed by force.

  • Diplomatic engagement must be backed by military and economic pressure on Russia.

  • Ukraine must receive credible security guarantees to defend its territorial integrity.


Canada’s Continued Commitment

Prime Minister Carney reiterated Canada’s steadfast support for Ukraine, highlighting:

  • $2 billion in new military support

  • A $2.3 billion loan through the G7 Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration Loans mechanism to help rebuild infrastructure and public systems

Carney underscored that Canada will continue working with allies to maintain pressure on Russia until its aggression ends.


A United Front

The meeting demonstrated continued unity among coalition members in supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and preparing for a negotiated settlement that delivers lasting security in Europe.
