On defence matters, Prime Ministers Carney and De Wever reaffirmed their shared commitment to NATO and security in Europe. Both leaders reiterated their strong support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and emphasized the importance of a just and lasting peace. In the lead-up to the NATO Summit later this week in The Hague, they agreed to further enhance defence procurement and security cooperation on NATO’s eastern flank.
The meeting comes at a pivotal time for transatlantic relations, as both Canada and Belgium play critical roles in global defence frameworks. With the upcoming NATO Summit, the two leaders’ discussion signals alignment on strategic priorities, particularly around energy resilience and coordinated responses to geopolitical threats. Their emphasis on strengthening supply chains for critical minerals also reflects a growing urgency to reduce dependency on non-allied sources.
Carney and De Wever committed to staying in close contact as both governments prepare for further engagements at the NATO Summit.
