Carney and von der Leyen Vow to Deepen Economic Ties Amid U.S. Tariff Pressures

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held a bilateral conversation Thursday as tensions rise over new U.S. tariffs targeting Canadian industries.

The two leaders expressed mutual concern about what they described as “unjustified global trade actions” initiated by the United States. Carney reaffirmed his commitment to defending Canada’s economic interests, specifically the country’s auto, steel, and aluminum sectors, and emphasized the need for a united transatlantic front.

In the call, Carney and von der Leyen agreed on the importance of strengthening economic ties between Canada and the European Union to safeguard jobs and enhance shared prosperity.

Beyond trade, the leaders also discussed key global issues, reaffirming their shared support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s ongoing invasion. They voiced a commitment to enhancing Canada-EU defence and security cooperation, underscoring the importance of maintaining stability across the transatlantic region.

The call signals a deepening of Canada’s engagement with European allies as global trade and geopolitical tensions mount. Both leaders agreed to stay in close contact as they navigate the evolving international landscape.
