Carney and Starmer Reaffirm Commitment to Ukraine Peace Efforts
Canada and the United Kingdom to coordinate closely with U.S. and Ukraine amid upcoming negotiations
OTTAWA, ON — Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.K. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer spoke on August 12 to reaffirm their joint commitment to securing peace in Ukraine and to express support for U.S.-led diplomatic efforts.
During their call, the two leaders agreed on what they called the “categorical imperatives” of ending Russia’s war of aggression and achieving a just and lasting peace that ensures long-term security for both Ukraine and Europe.
Support for U.S. and Ukrainian Leadership
Prime Ministers Carney and Starmer welcomed the efforts of President Donald Trump and the United States in preparing for upcoming peace negotiations. Both leaders emphasized that lasting peace must be secured in partnership with Ukraine and cannot come at the cost of its sovereignty.
As active members of the Coalition of the Willing, Canada and the United Kingdom pledged to continue close coordination with the U.S., President Zelenskyy, and the Ukrainian people in pursuit of a diplomatic resolution that upholds international law and territorial integrity.
Canada–U.K. Cooperation on Global Security
The call also reaffirmed the strength of the Canada–United Kingdom bilateral relationship, especially in areas of foreign policy alignment, defense cooperation, and shared democratic values. Both leaders committed to staying in regular contact as peace efforts progress.
