Carney Speaks with Amir of Qatar on Gaza Crisis and Trade Opportunities
Prime Minister reaffirms Canada’s commitment to a two-state solution and signals recognition of Palestinian statehood at UN
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke today with the Amir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen.
Humanitarian Disaster in Gaza
Carney thanked the Amir for Qatar’s role in addressing the humanitarian emergency and reaffirmed Canada’s position that peace requires a two-state solution: an independent, viable, and sovereign Palestinian state living alongside Israel in security.
He confirmed that Canada intends to recognize the State of Palestine later this month at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. That recognition, Carney noted, is contingent on the Palestinian Authority’s commitment to reforms.
The Prime Minister also highlighted Canada’s recent efforts to support stability in the region, including co-ordinating with allies to deliver urgent humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Strengthening Canada–Qatar Relations
Beyond regional security, the leaders discussed expanding bilateral trade and investment, with a focus on aerospace, energy, and defence sectors. Both agreed on the importance of deepening the Canada–Qatar economic relationship to generate new opportunities in both countries.
Why It Matters
The conversation reflects Canada’s growing diplomatic engagement in the Middle East at a time of escalating conflict in Gaza. Carney’s commitment to recognizing Palestinian statehood marks a significant policy shift, aligning Canada more closely with international partners advocating for a negotiated peace.
