Carney Meets Australian Prime Minister Albanese to Strengthen Canada–Australia Partnership

Carney Albanese Meeting Focuses on Trade, Defence and Indo-Pacific Stability

CANBERRA — Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on March 5 during his first official visit to Australia, as the two leaders reaffirmed the strength of the Canada–Australia relationship and outlined new areas for expanded cooperation.

The meeting in Canberra focused on strengthening economic ties, boosting defence collaboration, and advancing shared priorities across the Indo-Pacific region.

Expanding Trade and Investment Cooperation

Carney and Albanese identified several sectors where Canada and Australia will deepen collaboration, including energy, critical minerals, defence, and artificial intelligence.

Both leaders also highlighted the growing financial partnership between Canadian pension funds and Australian superannuation funds, which has become a significant source of cross-border investment. The collaboration aligns with Canada’s broader goal of mobilizing $1 trillion in investment over the next five years to support large-scale economic development and infrastructure projects.

As part of those efforts, Prime Minister Carney invited Australian superannuation funds to visit Canada later this year to explore additional opportunities for joint investment in major nation-building initiatives.

New Economic Dialogue Announced

The two leaders also announced the creation of formalized ministerial-level economic talks, designed to strengthen collaboration on investment, regulatory alignment, and economic security.

Officials from both countries will work toward modernizing the Canada–Australia Tax Treaty, a move expected to further streamline cross-border investment and trade between the two longstanding partners.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the new economic dialogue will help both countries coordinate strategies in key industries and ensure stronger alignment in an increasingly complex global economy.

Strengthening Indo-Pacific Security

Security cooperation also featured prominently in the discussions. Carney and Albanese reaffirmed their shared commitment to maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region, emphasizing the importance of stability and economic prosperity across the region.

To advance this objective, the two leaders agreed to strengthen defence cooperation through regular Defence Ministers’ Meetings and enhanced dialogue among senior officials. These discussions are expected to focus on practical areas of collaboration, including regional security, defence technology, and strategic partnerships.

Deepening Bilateral Ties

Both prime ministers underscored the importance of maintaining regular high-level engagement between Canada and Australia to accelerate joint strategic, economic, and security objectives.

Canada and Australia share longstanding ties as Commonwealth partners with closely aligned democratic values, economic priorities, and defence cooperation through alliances such as the Five Eyes intelligence partnership.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the leaders agreed to remain in close contact as both governments move forward with the initiatives discussed in Canberra.
