Carney and Albanese Reaffirm Canada-Australia Alliance in First Official Call
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese connected over the phone Sunday evening, exchanging congratulations and reaffirming the strong diplomatic bond between Canada and Australia.
In a social media post on Monday morning, Carney confirmed the call, noting that the two leaders discussed “strengthening trade ties, working together with Indo-Pacific partners, and defending the democratic values we both ran on.”
Great to speak with Australia’s Prime Minister, @AlboMP, yesterday evening and congratulate him on his election win.
We spoke about what’s next between our nations: strengthening trade ties, working together with Indo-Pacific partners, and defending the democratic values…

The conversation marks one of Carney’s earliest international engagements since his April election win. He emphasized the “big opportunities to keep leading together” and expressed optimism about continuing the dialogue with his Australian counterpart.
The formal readout from the Prime Minister’s Office highlighted ongoing cooperation in trade, defence, and efforts to maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific. Canada and Australia are longstanding allies in global and regional partnerships, including the Five Eyes intelligence alliance and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
Both leaders agreed to stay in close contact as they look to deepen bilateral relations.
