Canadian Stars Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov Exit Early at Shanghai Masters

Toronto – Canadian tennis talents Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov both faced early exits at the 2024 Shanghai Rolex Masters, marking a disappointing tournament for Canada’s top players.

Felix Auger-Aliassime, currently ranked 14th in the world, fell to France’s Alexandre Muller in a tight match, 6-4, 7-5. Despite a solid effort from the 24-year-old Montreal native, Muller’s aggressive baseline play and consistent returns proved too much for Auger-Aliassime, who struggled to convert crucial break points.

Meanwhile, Denis Shapovalov faced the powerful American Ben Shelton, losing in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-4. Shelton, known for his big serve and athleticism, managed to edge out Shapovalov in two tightly contested sets. Shapovalov, the 25-year-old from Richmond Hill, showed moments of brilliance but was unable to maintain the level needed to overcome the rising American star.

The early losses of Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov reflect the ongoing challenges both players have faced in the 2024 season. While both have delivered strong performances throughout the year, consistency on the big stage remains elusive as they work toward reclaiming their form heading into the final stretch of the ATP season.

Fans remain hopeful that Canada’s tennis stars will find their rhythm in the upcoming tournaments, as they continue to represent the country on the international stage.
