Canadian Delegation Engages in Constructive Tariff Discussions in Washington

Washington, D.C. — A high-level Canadian delegation, including Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne, Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, and Ambassador Kirsten Hillman, met today with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to address escalating trade tensions between the two nations. The discussions, held at the U.S. Department of Commerce, focused on recent U.S. tariffs on Canadian imports and potential retaliatory measures.

Minister Champagne described the meeting as “constructive,” emphasizing that both economic and national security implications were thoroughly examined. He expressed confidence in Canada’s strengthened position to advocate for its interests, stating, “We leave Washington better equipped to defend Canadian interests.”

Premier Ford characterized the discussions as “productive” and “positive,” noting that another meeting has been scheduled for next week. He remarked, “I’m feeling very positive,” and described it as “the best meeting” he’s ever had.

The meeting was convened following a series of escalating trade measures. Earlier this week, Premier Ford announced a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to U.S. states in response to U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. President Trump countered with threats to double those tariffs, leading to Ford pausing the surcharge and agreeing to today’s discussions.

While no immediate resolutions were achieved, both parties have committed to ongoing dialogue. Minister LeBlanc confirmed that discussions will continue, reflecting a mutual interest in resolving the trade disputes amicably.

The delegation’s efforts underscore the importance of the Canada-U.S. economic relationship and the commitment to finding mutually beneficial solutions amidst current challenges.
