Canada, United Kingdom Look to Expand $85-Billion Trade Relationship

Canada United Kingdom Relations Expand Through Trade and Security Cooperation

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney and United Kingdom Prime Minister Andy Burnham have discussed expanding bilateral cooperation as annual trade between Canada and the U.K. reaches $85 billion.

During a July 22 telephone conversation, Carney congratulated Burnham on becoming prime minister following his party leadership victory.

The two leaders reviewed the longstanding Canada–United Kingdom relationship and opportunities to build on growing cooperation across several strategic industries.

Defence, Energy and Technology Priorities

The prime ministers identified defence and security, energy, artificial intelligence and critical minerals as important areas for further collaboration.

Those sectors have become increasingly significant as Canada works to diversify trade, strengthen allied supply chains and expand international partnerships in advanced technology and national security.

With bilateral trade valued at $85 billion annually, the leaders said closer cooperation could contribute to greater security, stability and prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic.

Support for Ukraine Reaffirmed

Carney and Burnham also reaffirmed their support for Ukraine as it continues to defend itself against Russia’s war.

Canada and the United Kingdom have worked together through NATO and other international forums on European security, military assistance and economic measures targeting Russia.

The leaders agreed to remain in close contact as the two governments pursue deeper economic and security cooperation.
