Carney, Starmer Discuss Middle East Crisis and Strengthen Canada-UK Partnership

Canada UK partnership strengthened amid global security concerns

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM — Prime Minister Mark Carney met with U.K. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer on March 16 in London, where the two leaders discussed escalating tensions in the Middle East and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Canada–United Kingdom relations.

The bilateral meeting follows last week’s G7 Leaders’ virtual summit and comes amid growing global concern over conflict in the Middle East and its broader economic implications.

Focus on Middle East Escalation

During the meeting, Prime Minister Carney and Prime Minister Starmer condemned missile and drone attacks by the Iranian regime, including strikes targeting civilian populations and energy infrastructure.

The leaders expressed deep concern about the humanitarian impact of the conflict, the risk of further regional escalation, and the potential global economic consequences — particularly rising energy prices.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of continued diplomatic engagement to stabilize the region and mitigate further disruption.

Continued Support for Ukraine

Carney and Starmer also reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s ongoing invasion.

The two countries committed to maintaining coordinated pressure on Russia and continuing to provide support to Ukraine as it defends its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Strengthening Canada UK Cooperation

Beyond geopolitical issues, the meeting highlighted ongoing efforts to deepen economic and security cooperation between Canada and the United Kingdom.

The leaders discussed innovative approaches to mobilizing large-scale financing aimed at strengthening defence production and supply chains. This includes exploring initiatives such as the proposed Defence, Security and Resilience Bank, designed to enhance allied industrial capacity.

Ongoing Collaboration

Prime Minister Carney and Prime Minister Starmer concluded the meeting by reaffirming the strength of the Canada UK partnership and agreeing to remain in close contact as global challenges evolve.

The meeting reflects Canada’s broader strategy to strengthen alliances, diversify economic partnerships, and reinforce collective security in an increasingly uncertain geopolitical landscape.
