ANKARA, Türkiye — Canada and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening defence cooperation, announcing plans to closely coordinate emerging multilateral defence financing initiatives aimed at expanding industrial capacity, improving military interoperability and reinforcing collective security.
The joint statement was released July 8 during the 2026 NATO Summit in Ankara, where allied leaders are discussing measures to strengthen defence capabilities amid evolving global security challenges.
Coordinating Defence Investment
Canada and the United Kingdom said they recognize the shared challenge of rapidly scaling defence industrial production while improving resilience and strengthening deterrence among like-minded partners.
The two governments welcomed growing international interest in multilateral approaches to defence financing and procurement, describing such initiatives as important tools for supporting long-term investments across the defence supply chain.
According to the joint statement, these initiatives are intended to improve coordination among allies while enhancing the availability and interoperability of military capabilities.
Complementary Security Initiatives
The statement specifically highlighted the relationship between two emerging multinational initiatives:
- Canada’s proposed Defence, Security and Resilience Bank (DSRB).
- The United Kingdom’s Multilateral Defence Mechanism.
The two governments said the initiatives are highly complementary and can operate in parallel to strengthen defence investment and industrial capacity among participating countries.
Officials added that, together, the initiatives have the potential to improve defence procurement and manufacturing across allied nations.
Commitment to Ongoing Cooperation
Canada and the United Kingdom pledged to continue working closely to ensure their respective defence initiatives develop in a coordinated and mutually supportive manner.
The joint statement says both countries will pursue opportunities for cooperation wherever possible within the mandates of each initiative while encouraging other like-minded partners to participate in ongoing discussions.
