Canada Takes Bold Action at G20 Summit in Brazil
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrapped up his participation at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro today, where he collaborated with world leaders to address global challenges. The summit, hosted under Brazil’s presidency, focused on combating hunger and poverty, transitioning to clean energy, and enhancing economic participation for marginalized communities.
Highlighting Canada’s commitment to global cooperation, Trudeau announced the country’s involvement in two major international initiatives. Canada has joined the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, aimed at tackling food insecurity exacerbated by climate change, and the Global Clean Power Alliance, a UK-led partnership to accelerate investment in renewable energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Addressing Key Global Challenges
During the summit, Trudeau emphasized Canada’s ongoing support for global peace and security. He condemned Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which reached its 1,000th day on November 19, and reaffirmed Canada’s steadfast support for Ukraine. He also pledged to work with international partners, including Brazil, to address security concerns in the Middle East and beyond.
The Prime Minister announced over $68 million in new investments aimed at tackling a range of pressing issues:
- $24 million to combat drug and human trafficking, enhance law enforcement capacity to address organized crime, and bolster security at Latin American and Caribbean airports to deter illicit drug shipments.
- $25 million to restore global biodiversity, support conservation efforts in climate-stressed regions, and improve food security, particularly in vulnerable areas.
- $19 million to support women and girls in Latin America by addressing violence and discrimination, empowering women in conservation, and improving access to healthcare for at-risk populations, including Indigenous women.
A Commitment to Sustainable Development
Sustainable development was a central theme at the summit, with Trudeau reaffirming Canada’s dedication to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As Co-Chair of the UN SDGs Advocates group, the Prime Minister participated in Global Citizen NOW, a high-profile forum aimed at driving global progress toward the SDGs.
Canada endorsed a G20 Leaders’ Declaration, committing to work alongside international partners to make tangible improvements in people’s lives, from job creation to housing affordability. Trudeau highlighted his government’s efforts to curb inflation, expand the middle class, and ensure economic growth benefits all Canadians.
A Message of Unity
“Shared challenges require shared solutions,” said Trudeau. “At the G20 Summit in Brazil, I announced new action to crack down on drug trafficking, fight climate change, create well-paying jobs, and ensure stability and security for Canadians. Our government is focused on making life better, fairer, and safer for you.”
The G20 Summit underscored the interconnected nature of today’s challenges, from climate change to global security. Trudeau’s active role in the discussions reinforced Canada’s position as a leader in addressing these issues, with tangible actions aimed at improving lives both at home and abroad.
