Canada-Palestine relations focus on Gaza crisis and regional stability

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday, discussing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, governance reforms within the Palestinian Authority, and Canada’s continued support for a negotiated two-state solution.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Carney expressed Canada’s deep concern over the ongoing humanitarian situation in Gaza and reiterated opposition to Israeli settlement expansion and settler violence in the West Bank.

The Prime Minister stated that unilateral actions continue to undermine prospects for long-term peace and stability in the region.

Canada backs negotiated two-state solution

During the call, Carney reaffirmed Canada’s longstanding support for a negotiated two-state solution that would see an independent and sovereign Palestinian state coexist peacefully alongside Israel.

Officials said the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of diplomacy and international cooperation in advancing a sustainable resolution to the conflict.

Concerns over Gaza and West Bank violence

The discussion comes amid continued instability in Gaza and heightened tensions across the region.

Carney highlighted Canada’s concerns regarding:

  • The humanitarian crisis in Gaza
  • Civilian suffering and instability
  • Israeli settlement expansion
  • Settler violence in the West Bank

The Prime Minister’s Office said Canada remains committed to supporting peace and stability efforts alongside international partners.

Palestinian Authority reforms discussed

Carney also welcomed steps taken by the Palestinian Authority to strengthen governance, accountability, and democratic institutions.

The Prime Minister noted that Hamas cannot play a role in future governance structures and stressed the importance of continued reforms within Palestinian institutions.

Canada expressed support for ongoing governance improvements aimed at increasing institutional credibility and stability.

Canada-Palestine relations remain active

The conversation reflects Canada’s continued diplomatic engagement in the Middle East through humanitarian assistance, international cooperation, and support for peace negotiations.

Both leaders agreed to remain in contact as regional developments continue.
