Federal, Provincial and Territorial Ministers Meet in Toronto to Tackle Regulatory Red Tape
TORONTO – Federal, provincial, and territorial ministers responsible for reducing regulatory barriers gathered in Toronto on May 21 for the first-ever national meeting focused on eliminating red tape across Canada.
The meeting was co-hosted by Shafqat Ali and Andrea Khanjin and centred on improving government efficiency, streamlining regulations, and reducing administrative burdens for businesses and Canadians.
According to the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, ministers discussed ways to modernize government operations by simplifying requirements, improving digital services, and updating outdated regulations that can slow economic growth and investment.
The meeting comes as governments across Canada face increasing pressure to improve service delivery while supporting economic competitiveness in a rapidly changing global economy.
Governments Discuss AI Tools to Modernize Services
One of the key discussion points during the meeting was the potential use of artificial intelligence tools to help governments reduce delays and improve regulatory processes.
Ministers explored how AI could support faster decision-making, improve compliance systems, and simplify interactions between governments, businesses, and the public.
Officials also discussed creating more coordinated approaches between jurisdictions to make government requirements easier to understand and navigate for Canadians and businesses operating across provincial and territorial borders.
Focus on Faster and Smarter Government Services
The ministers reaffirmed a shared objective of making governments “work faster and smarter” through collaboration and modernization efforts.
As part of the next steps, federal, provincial, and territorial officials will develop a joint workplan aimed at tracking progress and identifying additional opportunities to cut unnecessary regulatory barriers.
A follow-up meeting is scheduled for Fall 2026 to review progress and continue collaboration on red tape reduction initiatives.
The meeting reflects growing efforts by governments across Canada to modernize regulatory systems while improving efficiency and reducing costs for businesses and taxpayers.
