Prime Minister Carney Reaffirms Canada’s Leadership on United Nations Day
Carney highlights Canada’s founding role and enduring commitment to global peace, cooperation, and shared prosperity
Ottawa, Ontario – Prime Minister Mark Carney marked United Nations Day by reaffirming Canada’s longstanding commitment to global peace, collective security, and international cooperation — values that have defined the nation’s role on the world stage for eight decades.
In his official statement, the Prime Minister reflected on the origins of the United Nations (UN), founded in 1945 out of the devastation of the Second World War when 50 nations gathered in San Francisco to sign the UN Charter. Canada was among those founding members, with then-Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King representing the country at the signing ceremony.
80 years ago, 50 nations came together to sign the UN Charter. As a founding member, Canada has proudly contributed to the achievement of its many milestones.

Carney also acknowledged the lasting influence of Canadians who helped shape the UN’s core principles. John Peters Humphrey, a Canadian legal scholar, authored the first draft of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and Lester B. Pearson’s diplomatic leadership during the Suez Crisis helped establish modern peacekeeping — a tradition carried forward by more than 125,000 Canadians who have served in UN operations.
“On this United Nations Day, Canada affirms our steadfast commitment to a world where prosperity is shared, security is collective, and peace is lasting,” said Prime Minister Carney. “As the United Nations looks ahead to its next 80 years, Canada is building our economy and investing in our shared defence, so that we can lead our partners into a new era of cooperation.”
The Prime Minister’s remarks underscored Canada’s focus on global leadership through both values and action — emphasizing that the nation’s future influence will depend not only on its ideals but on its investments in economic and defence capacity.
As the UN marks its 80th anniversary, Canada continues to play an active role in advancing international development, humanitarian assistance, and peacekeeping missions around the world, while promoting human rights and democratic governance.
