Prime Minister Carney to Welcome Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden to Canada

Canada Luxembourg Relations Strengthened Through Ottawa Visit

Ottawa, Ontario – Prime Minister Mark Carney will welcome Luc Frieden to Canada later this week, as Ottawa looks to deepen economic, security, and investment ties with one of Europe’s most important financial hubs.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Frieden will visit Ottawa from February 7 to 9, 2026, marking a key moment in Canada–Luxembourg relations. Luxembourg is a NATO ally and one of the largest sources of foreign direct investment in Canada.

Expanding Trade, Investment, and Innovation

During the visit, the two leaders are expected to discuss opportunities to strengthen cooperation across advanced manufacturing, infrastructure, aerospace, space-related technologies, and financial services. Federal officials say the talks will focus on attracting new Luxembourg-based investment into Canada while supporting increased Canadian exports to the European market.

Luxembourg is Europe’s largest investment fund centre and the second largest globally, managing more than $11.5 trillion in assets. In 2024 alone, Luxembourg’s foreign direct investment stock in Canada totalled $22.3 billion, underscoring the depth of the economic relationship.

Security and NATO Cooperation

As NATO allies, Prime Ministers Carney and Frieden will also address global security challenges, including Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. Discussions are expected to centre on reinforcing transatlantic security, increasing defence and security investments, and protecting NATO’s northern and western flanks amid growing geopolitical uncertainty.

Canada and Luxembourg are longstanding partners in international institutions, including the United Nations, NATO, and La Francophonie. Luxembourg further strengthened its diplomatic presence in Canada by opening an embassy in Ottawa in 2025.

Strengthening Reliable Partnerships

In a statement announcing the visit, Prime Minister Carney said Canada remains focused on diversifying trade relationships and deepening ties with trusted partners.

“Canada and Luxembourg are strong partners with growing ties in defence, technology, investment, and trade,” Carney said. “I look forward to hosting Prime Minister Frieden as we deepen our economic cooperation, strengthen the NATO Alliance, and create opportunity for our workers and businesses.”

The visit comes as Canada continues to pursue a strategy of broadening its international partnerships to build a more resilient and globally connected economy.
