Carney reaffirms support for Lebanon in call with President Joseph Aoun

Canada-Lebanon relations focus on humanitarian aid, regional stability, and security

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Thursday, reaffirming Canada’s support for Lebanon amid ongoing regional conflict and instability.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Carney expressed solidarity with the Lebanese people as the country continues to face widespread destruction, civilian casualties, and mass displacement linked to escalating violence in the region.

Canada reiterates support for Lebanon

During the call, Carney emphasized Canada’s longstanding support for Lebanon through humanitarian assistance and peacekeeping efforts.

The Prime Minister highlighted Canada’s contributions to regional peace and security, including support for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Officials noted that Canada has provided more than $800 million in international assistance to Lebanon since 2016.

The assistance has included humanitarian relief, stabilization initiatives, and development support aimed at helping civilians affected by conflict.

Focus on Hezbollah disarmament and ceasefire efforts

The leaders also discussed security concerns involving Hezbollah and Israel.

Carney expressed support for the Lebanese government’s efforts to disarm Hezbollah and condemned continued Hezbollah attacks on Israel. He called for sustained progress toward disarmament with backing from the international community.

At the same time, the Prime Minister condemned Israel’s invasion of Lebanon, describing it as illegal, and reiterated Canada’s support for Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Prime Minister underscored the importance of maintaining a meaningful ceasefire to help stabilize the region and allow displaced civilians to return safely to their homes.

Canada calls for de-escalation

The conversation also focused on broader efforts to reduce tensions in the Middle East.

Carney stated that Canada is prepared to continue working with international partners to:

  • Protect civilians
  • Support long-term regional stability
  • Advance diplomatic de-escalation efforts

Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact as developments continue in the region.

Canada-Lebanon relations remain significant

Canada is home to a large Lebanese diaspora community, and Ottawa has maintained diplomatic, humanitarian, and development ties with Lebanon for decades.

The federal government says continued engagement is aimed at supporting peace, stability, and reconstruction efforts while helping vulnerable civilians impacted by ongoing violence.
