Carney, South Korean President discuss energy security and trade ties
Canada-Korea relations strengthen following Team Canada Trade Mission
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Wednesday, with discussions focused on expanding economic cooperation, energy security, and defence partnerships between Canada and the Republic of Korea.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the conversation built on momentum generated during last month’s Team Canada Trade Mission to Seoul, which aimed to deepen commercial ties between the two countries.
Expanding Canada-Korea relations
During the call, Carney emphasized Canada’s role as a “stable, reliable, and predictable partner” as both countries look to strengthen cooperation across several strategic sectors.
The leaders discussed opportunities to deepen collaboration in:
- Trade and investment
- Technology and innovation
- Liquefied natural gas (LNG)
- Critical minerals
- Natural resource development
The federal government has increasingly positioned Canada as a key supplier of energy and critical minerals to Indo-Pacific allies seeking diversified and secure supply chains.
Energy security a key focus
The discussion also addressed the ongoing energy crisis linked to instability in the Middle East.
Carney reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to supporting South Korea’s energy security needs, particularly through reliable access to Canadian LNG and other energy resources.
Energy security has become a growing priority for many countries in the Indo-Pacific region amid global supply disruptions and geopolitical uncertainty.
Defence and security cooperation
The leaders also reviewed efforts to strengthen bilateral security cooperation.
Officials referenced the Security and Defence Cooperation Partnership established between Canada and South Korea last October, which aims to enhance collaboration on regional security and defence initiatives.
Canada has continued expanding strategic relationships in the Indo-Pacific as part of broader efforts to diversify economic and geopolitical partnerships.
Future diplomatic engagement
Carney said he looks forward to hosting President Lee for a future visit to Canada as the two countries continue advancing their partnership.
Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact.
