Canada Signals Up to $5.45M Investment to Expand the Northern Super League at Toronto Championship Final

Toronto — The federal government has announced its intent to invest up to $5.45 million to support the growth of the Northern Super League (NSL), Canada’s first professional women’s soccer league, during championship celebrations at BMO Field in Toronto.

The announcement took place ahead of the NSL Final, the culmination of a three-day festival featuring fan events, community programming, and the league’s inaugural championship match. This year’s NSL Final was delivered with support from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).

The investment—still subject to discussions between the league and federal Regional Development Agencies (RDAs)—would focus on upgrading facilities used by NSL clubs across the country. According to the government, each agency would use its available program tools to contribute to a coordinated, pan-Canadian approach aimed at strengthening the league’s long-term development and economic impact.

The proposed funding represents a milestone for women’s professional sport in Canada, recognizing the economic, social, and community value of the NSL’s inaugural season. Since launching with six founding clubs—Halifax Tides FC, Montreal Roses FC, Ottawa Rapid FC, AFC Toronto, Calgary Wild FC, and Vancouver Rise FC—the league has drawn thousands of fans and contributed to tourism and local spending.

Federal Ministers Highlight Economic and Community Impact

Several cabinet members joined league officials for the announcement, emphasizing the NSL’s growing influence on Canada’s sports landscape.

“The Northern Super League is changing the game for women in sport, inspiring communities and strengthening our economy,” said Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation and Minister responsible for FedDev Ontario. “Our government is proud to have supported this incredible event and to be investing in the continued growth of the league.”

Minister of Industry Mélanie Joly highlighted the league’s impact in Quebec, noting the government’s engagement with the Montréal Roses at what she called “a pivotal moment” for women’s soccer in Canada.

Other federal leaders—including Eleanor Olszewski, Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience; Sean Fraser, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada; and Adam van Koeverden, Secretary of State (Sport)**—also underscored the NSL’s role in inspiring young athletes, building community infrastructure, and uniting fans nationwide.

NSL Leadership Welcomes Federal Support

NSL Founder and Chief Growth Officer Diana Matheson said the league is committed to building a strong professional pathway for Canadian athletes.

“We’re proud to build alongside partners like the Government of Canada who share that vision,” Matheson said. “Women’s sport…is proud to invest and build in communities across the country.”

Economic Boost for the GTA

In addition to the potential $5.45 million in facility investments, FedDev Ontario previously committed $180,000 to support the NSL Championship Weekend. The three-day event is expected to attract thousands of visitors and generate significant economic activity across the Greater Toronto Area.

With expanding fan engagement, growing attendance, and an increasing profile on the international stage, the NSL’s first season marks a significant step forward for women’s professional sports in Canada.

The Government of Canada says further opportunities to support community infrastructure linked to the league’s growth will continue to be explored.
