Canada Hosts G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Charlevoix

CHARLEVOIX, QC – Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly welcomed international counterparts to Charlevoix for the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, emphasizing Canada’s role in addressing global geopolitical challenges.

Joly met with several key leaders, including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, to discuss tariffs, ceasefire negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, and the broader role of the G7 in tackling international issues.

“Our discussions focused on how we can collectively navigate these geopolitical challenges and ensure stability,” Joly stated.

The minister also engaged in talks with Japan’s Foreign Affairs Minister IWAYA Takeshi, highlighting the strong economic and security partnership between Canada and Japan. The two nations reached an agreement in principle on an Information Security Agreement as part of the Canada-Japan Action Plan.

“We are committed to further enhancing our collaboration,” Joly said, welcoming the agreement as a milestone in bilateral relations.

Joly also met with EU High Representative and European Commission Vice President Kaja Kallas to discuss continued support for Ukraine and the strengthening of Canada-EU security and defense ties. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to economic cooperation and joint strategic efforts.

French Minister Jean-Noël Barrot was among the attendees, with Canada and France aligning on economic priorities and shared geopolitical challenges. The ministers also condemned the recent massacres in Syria, reaffirming their commitment to peace and accountability.

“As G7 nations, we remain steadfast in our support for global stability and the protection of civilians,” Joly said.

The G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Charlevoix continues as global leaders work on coordinated responses to pressing international issues. Joly expressed gratitude to local leaders, including Mayor Michel Couturier and Innu First Nations Elder Jacinthe Connolly, for their warm welcome.

With discussions ongoing, the outcomes of the G7 meeting are expected to shape international policy in the months ahead.
