Canada Falls to Finland in Shootout at 2025 IIHF World Championship
Canada’s perfect run ends with 2–1 shootout loss to Finland; Sweden up next in Group A finale
STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN — Team Canada suffered its first defeat at the 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championship, falling 2–1 in a shootout to Finland on Monday at Avicii Arena. The loss drops Canada to 5–0–1 in Group A play, while Finland improves to 4–1–0–1.

Ryan O’Reilly opened the scoring for Canada in the second period, but Finland’s Patrik Puistola equalized in the third, leading to overtime and a shootout. In the shootout, Eeli Tolvanen netted the winner for Finland, while Juuse Saros stopped 37 of 38 shots in regulation and made key saves in the shootout.
Despite the loss, Canada remains in contention for the top spot in Group A and will face co-host Sweden in their final preliminary round game on Tuesday.
