Canada Marks U.S. 250th Anniversary with Tribute to Enduring Cross-Border Friendship

Prime Minister Mark Carney highlights centuries of cooperation as Canada joins Americans in celebrating 250 years of independence

OTTAWA — Canada is joining the United States in celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence, with Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighting the enduring friendship, shared history and close partnership that have defined the relationship between the two neighbouring countries.

In a statement released July 4, Carney reflected on the longstanding ties between Canada and the United States, describing the two nations’ relationship as one built over generations through cooperation in defence, trade, emergency response and scientific achievement.

Quoting former U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1936 remarks describing the Canada-U.S. border as “the noblest monument to peace and to neighbourly economic and social friendship in all the world,” Carney said that vision continues to define the partnership today.

Shared History of Cooperation

The Prime Minister noted that Canadians and Americans have stood together during some of the defining moments of modern history, serving alongside one another during the Second World War, the Korean War and the mission in Afghanistan.

He also pointed to major joint initiatives that have strengthened both countries, including the creation of the St. Lawrence Seaway, the establishment of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), and ongoing collaboration in space exploration through the Artemis II mission.

Carney also highlighted examples of mutual assistance during times of crisis, including American firefighters helping battle the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire and Canadians welcoming stranded American airline passengers following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Canadian Tributes Planned

To mark the historic milestone, Canada will illuminate its embassy in Washington, D.C., while Niagara Falls will be lit in red, white and blue in honour of the occasion.

Canadian military vessels will also participate alongside the U.S. Navy during Sail250 celebrations in Norfolk, Baltimore and New York City, showcasing the longstanding defence partnership between the two countries.

As a lasting symbol of friendship, Canada will gift 250 maple trees to be planted in Washington, D.C., and across the 13 U.S. states that share a border with Canada.

Looking Ahead

The Prime Minister said the Canada-U.S. relationship continues to be built on shared prosperity, common democratic values and decades of cooperation.

Concluding his statement, Carney extended congratulations to Americans celebrating the country’s 250th birthday on behalf of the Government of Canada.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I extend my best wishes to the American people as they celebrate the United States’ 250th birthday,” the Prime Minister said.
