Canada Celebrates Europe Day, Highlights Strong Partnership with EU

Ottawa, Ontario – As Europe commemorates its annual Europe Day, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has issued a statement celebrating the enduring partnership between Canada and the European Union (EU), emphasizing shared values of democracy, peace, and unity.

In his statement, Prime Minister Trudeau highlighted Canada’s long-standing relationship with the EU, dating back to 1959, making it the EU’s longest-standing industrialized partner. He noted the significant strides made through the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, which has facilitated the creation of middle-class jobs on both sides of the Atlantic.

Moreover, Trudeau underscored the importance of the Strategic Partnership Agreement, which has deepened collaboration between Canada and the EU across various sectors, including security, defense, infrastructure, health, and clean energy. The recent establishment of the Canada-EU Green Alliance further demonstrates their joint commitment to environmental protection and combating climate change.

Europe Day, observed annually on May 9th, marks the anniversary of the historical Schuman Declaration in 1950, which proposed the creation of a united Europe to ensure lasting peace and prosperity on the continent.

Against the backdrop of Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine, Prime Minister Trudeau reiterated Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s defense efforts. He emphasized Canada’s commitment to strengthening NATO’s collective defense measures in Europe, including through Operation REASSURANCE, Canada’s largest active overseas military operation.

The Prime Minister’s statement emphasized the importance of unity in addressing global challenges, reflecting on Canada and Europe’s shared history of cooperation in various endeavors, from the World Wars to trade, innovation, and health.

In closing, Prime Minister Trudeau expressed optimism for the future of the Canada-EU partnership, stating, “Together, let’s keep building a safer, fairer, and more prosperous world. Happy Europe Day!”
