Carney, Milei discuss trade deal progress and mining ties between Canada and Argentina
Canada-Argentina relations expand through trade, critical minerals, and defence cooperation
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney held a bilateral call with Argentine President Javier Milei on Thursday, focusing on advancing trade negotiations, expanding investment, and strengthening cooperation in key strategic sectors.
The discussion highlights growing momentum in Canada-Argentina relations, particularly as both countries look to deepen economic ties within a shifting global trade landscape.
Progress on Canada–Mercosur trade negotiations
A central topic of the call was ongoing negotiations toward a free trade agreement between Canada and Mercosur, a South American trade bloc representing the world’s fifth-largest economy with a combined GDP exceeding $4 trillion.
Both leaders welcomed progress in the talks, which are seen as a key opportunity to expand market access and strengthen trade diversification for Canada.
