Canada and Vietnam Deepen Ties Amid Growing Partnership

Ottawa, ON – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh held a high-level meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between Canada and Vietnam.

The meeting built on the momentum of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties celebrated last year and highlighted the deepening collaboration between the two nations. Discussions focused on a range of areas, including defence and security, trade and investment, and sustainable development initiatives.

Both leaders acknowledged the ongoing implementation of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy and the Canada-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership, emphasizing the importance of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in bolstering trade and investment opportunities.

Prime Minister Trudeau and Prime Minister Chinh also underscored their commitment to tackling global challenges, such as climate change and the clean energy transition. Canada’s support for climate programming and educational scholarships in Vietnam were highlighted as examples of the countries’ shared dedication to sustainable development.

The leaders reiterated the importance of maintaining the rules-based international order and resolving disputes peacefully in accordance with international law. They also acknowledged the valuable contributions of the Vietnamese community in Canada, a vibrant diaspora that continues to strengthen cultural and economic ties between the two countries.

In their discussions, the prime ministers expressed interest in exploring the possibility of a strategic partnership and agreed to maintain close contact as they work towards shared goals.

The meeting signals Canada’s continued commitment to fostering strong ties with Vietnam, a key partner in the Indo-Pacific region.
