Canada and EU Strengthen Strategic Partnership Following Leaders’ Call

OTTAWA – Prime Minister Mark Carney and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen held a bilateral call Monday to reinforce Canada–EU relations amid shifting global trade dynamics and mounting economic uncertainty.

The leaders reflected on progress made during the recent EU-Canada Summit, expressing mutual satisfaction with outcomes and momentum on a broad range of shared priorities.

Focus on Competitiveness and Strategic Co-operation

At the heart of the discussion was a joint commitment to enhance economic competitiveness. Carney and von der Leyen reviewed efforts to deepen strategic partnerships in areas such as:

  • Industrial policy

  • Digital trade

  • Critical raw materials

  • Clean technology

These topics align with broader summit goals to position Canada and the EU as global leaders in sustainable and innovative economic development.

Expanding Collaboration Under CPTPP and Defence Initiatives

Carney and von der Leyen also discussed opportunities for enhanced co-operation under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and new potential collaborations in defence industrial procurement and manufacturing.

These initiatives reflect ongoing work through the newly launched Security and Defence Partnership, which aims to bolster shared resilience in global defence supply chains.

Ongoing High-Level Engagement

Both leaders committed to maintaining close and frequent contact as Canada and the EU advance their shared agenda. The conversation underscored a strong alignment between the two partners at a time when multilateral co-operation is increasingly vital.
