Carney, Aga Khan Strengthen Canada Partnership on Housing and Development
The meeting underscores a longstanding relationship between Canada and the Ismaili Imamat, supported by a Canadian Ismaili community of approximately 120,000 people. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the discussions built on shared priorities around inclusive growth, international development, and community investment.
New Push on Affordable Housing
A key outcome of the meeting is a renewed focus on expanding affordable housing across Canada. Prime Minister Carney welcomed new investments by the Ismaili Imamat in multi-generational, not-for-profit housing projects aimed at increasing supply for low- and middle-income households.
The federal government will also work with the Ismaili Imamat through the Build Canada Homes initiative to establish a long-term partnership and develop additional housing projects nationwide.

Economic Partnership Platform Announced
The leaders also unveiled a new Economic Partnership Platform designed to strengthen development financing in emerging markets. The initiative will bring together FinDev Canada and the Aga Khan Fund to align public and private capital.
The platform will target investments in infrastructure, renewable energy, and agriculture across Africa and Asia—regions identified as critical to Canada’s evolving international economic strategy.
Focus on Education and Workforce Development
In addition, officials have been tasked with identifying opportunities for collaboration in education, skills training, and workforce development. The goal is to leverage Canadian expertise and talent to support economic growth in partner countries.
Discussion on Middle East Tensions
The meeting also included discussions on the situation in the Middle East. Both leaders stressed the importance of preventing further escalation, with the Aga Khan highlighting the impact ongoing tensions are having on civilian populations, including Ismaili communities.
Strengthening Institutional Ties
Prime Minister Carney announced that the Honourable David Lametti will serve as Canada’s Representative to the Ismaili Imamat. In this role, Lametti will help coordinate and deepen collaboration between Canada and the Imamat at a strategic level.
Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact as the partnership advances.
