Caledon Earns Bird Friendly City Certification from Nature Canada
Caledon Bird Friendly City certification highlights conservation and habitat protection efforts
CALEDON — The Town of Caledon has officially been certified as a Bird Friendly City by Nature Canada, recognizing the municipality’s efforts in bird conservation, habitat protection and environmental education.
The designation highlights Caledon’s work in reducing threats to bird populations while promoting biodiversity and community awareness across the town.
National Recognition for Environmental Leadership
The Bird Friendly City certification is awarded to municipalities that meet standards in three core areas:
- Threat reduction
- Habitat protection and restoration
- Community outreach and education
Town officials say the certification reflects years of collaboration between council, municipal staff, local organizations and residents.
Mayor Annette Groves said the recognition reinforces the municipality’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
“This designation reflects Caledon’s commitment to protecting our natural environment and the wildlife that depend on it,” Groves said in a statement. “Becoming a Bird Friendly City is the result of ongoing collaboration between Council, staff, community partners and residents who care about preserving the landscapes that make Caledon unique.”
Council Action Helped Advance Certification
On January 28, 2025, Caledon council approved a motion directing staff to pursue Bird Friendly City status and continue supporting long-term conservation initiatives.
Since then, the Town has expanded several programs and policies that contributed to the certification, including:
- Encouraging bird-friendly building design during development reviews
- Implementing dark-sky lighting measures to reduce light pollution
- Supporting animal control by-laws aimed at limiting free-roaming cats
- Increasing public education around window collisions and wildlife protection
Officials say these measures are intended to reduce human-related threats that contribute to bird injuries and habitat disruption.
Certification Requires Ongoing Progress
Nature Canada’s certification program requires municipalities to continue improving environmental practices over time.
Caledon will now submit regular progress reports and pursue future renewals under the national program’s guidelines.
The Town is also supporting a community-led Bird Team and expanding public outreach efforts to help residents participate in local conservation initiatives.
Protecting Local Ecosystems
Caledon is widely recognized for its natural landscapes, rural areas and environmental assets throughout Peel Region and the Greater Toronto Area.
Municipal officials say the Bird Friendly City designation supports broader goals tied to sustainability, biodiversity and ecological preservation.
