Brampton Steelheads Acquire Defenceman Spencer Sova in Trade with Erie Otters
BRAMPTON, ON — The Brampton Steelheads have bolstered their defensive lineup by acquiring overage defenceman Spencer Sova from the Erie Otters. In the deal, Sova and a fifteenth-round pick in 2028 are exchanged for three conditional draft picks and another fifteenth-round pick in 2028. The conditional selections include a second-round pick in 2025, a fourth-round pick in 2026, and a fourth-round pick in 2028, contingent upon Sova’s return to the Steelheads after his current commitments.
Spencer Sova, a Windsor, Ontario native, was a first-round pick (8th overall) in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection by the Erie Otters. Sova quickly established himself as a valuable player in the league, recording 28 points (9 goals, 19 assists) in 64 games during his rookie season in 2021-22. His performance earned him a spot on Team Canada’s U-18 squad, where he served as an assistant captain and contributed three assists in three games.
In the 2022-23 season, Sova was named an assistant captain for the Otters, where he achieved career highs with 39 points (16 goals, 23 assists). His leadership was further recognized when he was named captain of the Otters for the 2023-24 season, guiding the team to its first postseason appearance since 2017.
Throughout his OHL career, Sova has consistently performed, amassing 98 points (39 goals, 59 assists) in 190 regular-season games. He has also gained experience through multiple invitations to NHL development camps, including with the Buffalo Sabres in 2022, the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2023, and most recently, the New Jersey Devils in 2024.
The Brampton Steelheads are gearing up for the upcoming OHL season, with Sova expected to play a crucial role in strengthening their defense. The team’s first game of the 2024-25 season is scheduled for September 27th against the Brantford Bulldogs at the CAA Centre, marking the start of what promises to be an exciting year for the Steelheads and their fans.
