Brampton Leaders Condemn Violence at Hindu Sabha Mandir, Push for New Protections
BRAMPTON, ON — Local and national leaders are condemning an act of violence that occurred at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton on Sunday, November 3, 2024, underscoring concerns for the safety of places of worship.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the incident on social media, calling the violence “unacceptable.” In his post, he emphasized that “every Canadian has the right to practice their faith freely and safely,” while also acknowledging the Peel Regional Police for their swift response.
Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown also voiced his disapproval and highlighted the need for additional safety measures. In an interview with CP24, Brown emphasized that “violence and intimidation have no place” at places of worship, reiterating that religious freedom is a cornerstone of Canada’s values. He later took to social media to announce that he will bring forward a motion to Brampton City Council seeking to prohibit protests near places of worship.
Places of worship should not be subjected to violence and intimidation. I spoke to @CP24 this evening on why the violence at the Hindu Sabha earlier today has no place in Canada. Religious freedom in Canada is a foundational value. We must make sure places of worship are safe. pic.twitter.com/HbWpacNQQ9
