Bold New Play “Erased” Premieres at Theatre Passe Muraille
Toronto, ON — Theatre Passe Muraille, in collaboration with Open Heart Surgery Theatre, is set to stage the world premiere of Erased, an ambitious and visually striking play by Coleen Shirin MacPherson. Running from November 20 to 30, 2024, Erased is poised to captivate Toronto audiences with its imaginative portrayal of life in a post-climate collapse world, inside a bizarre greeting card factory where workers face extreme pressures to meet unrealistic production quotas.
The 11-member cast brings this unique physical theatre piece to life, blending elements of absurdism, dark comedy, political theatre, and poetry. Set against the backdrop of a society addicted to production, Erased delves into the consequences of late capitalism and the systems that oppress and define individuals. The play unfolds in a dystopian setting where machinery not only controls the pace of work but also shapes and erases the workers’ identities.
Theatre Passe Muraille is known for its commitment to fostering innovative and daring theatre experiences, and Erased continues this tradition by pushing the boundaries of conventional storytelling. Through a surreal combination of genres, the play challenges audiences to reflect on their roles in the larger machinery of society, encouraging a deeper contemplation of the human spirit’s resilience and the potential for change.
The play’s darkly comedic approach serves as a commentary on the absurdity of our world’s relentless pursuit of productivity, while its poetic elements evoke a sense of urgency for a “soft revolution.” The production’s creators aim to spark a conversation about the impacts of climate change, the exploitation of workers, and the search for meaning in a world that increasingly values output over humanity.
Erased runs at Theatre Passe Muraille, 16 Ryerson Ave., Toronto, from November 20 to November 30, with tickets available through the theatre’s website. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit theatrempm.ca.
The play promises to be a compelling journey into the future, where resistance emerges not just as a choice but a necessity in the struggle for survival.
