Caminero’s Grand Slam Sinks Blue Jays in Wild 11–9 Loss to Rays
Toronto’s rally falls short after Tampa Bay’s five-run ninth spoils Varsho’s two-homer night
TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays saw their four-game winning streak snapped in heartbreaking fashion Tuesday night at Rogers Centre, as the Tampa Bay Rays stormed back with a five-run ninth inning to claim an 11–9 victory.
Rays rookie Junior Caminero delivered the decisive blow, crushing a grand slam off Jays closer Jeff Hoffman to cap off Tampa Bay’s dramatic comeback.
Toronto entered the ninth leading 7–6, thanks to Daulton Varsho’s second home run of the night — a three-run shot in the bottom of the eighth. But the wheels came off for Hoffman, who gave up five runs, including Caminero’s bases-loaded blast, and recorded just one out before being pulled.
Blue Jays’ Offense Shines Despite Collapse
Varsho was a bright spot for the Jays, finishing with two homers and four RBIs. Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. each added RBI doubles in the bottom of the ninth to pull Toronto back within two runs, but the rally fizzled when Ernie Clement grounded out to end the game.
Chris Bassitt had a shaky start for Toronto, allowing six runs (four earned) over five innings. The Rays jumped out to a 4–0 lead in the second inning, highlighted by Jose Siri’s solo homer and a two-run double by Yandy Diaz.
Toronto chipped away, scoring in four straight innings, and appeared poised for their fifth consecutive win after Varsho’s go-ahead homer. But the Jays’ bullpen faltered, and the Rays pounced late.
What’s Next
The Blue Jays (20–21) will look to rebound in Game 2 of the series on Wednesday night. Chris Bassitt (3–2, 3.35 ERA) is scheduled to start against Rays right-hander Ryan Pepiot (2–4, 3.86 ERA).
