Mariners Defeat Blue Jays 6–2 in Game 5 to Take 3–2 ALCS Lead

Eugenio Suárez’s grand slam breaks late tie as series heads back to Toronto

SEATTLE — The Toronto Blue Jays now face elimination after the Seattle Mariners claimed a dramatic 6–2 victory in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series at T-Mobile Park. With the win, Seattle takes a 3–2 series lead heading back to Toronto.

For much of the night, it was a tense pitchers’ duel between Kevin Gausman and Logan Gilbert, each limiting early damage before the bats woke up late. Seattle struck first in the second inning when Eugenio Suárez launched a solo home run to left field for a 1–0 lead.

The Blue Jays answered in the fifth when George Springer doubled to drive in Addison Barger, tying the game 1–1. An inning later, Ernie Clement came through with a clutch RBI single that scored Andrés Giménez, putting Toronto briefly ahead 2–1.

But Seattle rallied in the bottom of the eighth. Cal Raleigh tied the game with a solo home run, setting the stage for a crushing blow — Suárez’s grand slam off Erik Swanson that brought the home crowd to its feet and gave the Mariners a 6–2 lead.

Toronto was unable to recover in the ninth as Seattle’s bullpen closed out the win. Gausman finished with six strong innings and seven strikeouts, but the Blue Jays’ offence went quiet after the sixth, managing just one baserunner the rest of the way.

With the series shifting back to Rogers Centre for Game 6, the Blue Jays will need to win two straight at home to keep their World Series hopes alive.
