Mariners Edge Blue Jays 3–1 in ALCS Game 1
Seattle takes series lead as Toronto’s bats fall silent at Rogers Centre
TORONTO — The Seattle Mariners struck first in the American League Championship Series, defeating the Toronto Blue Jays 3–1 in Game 1 at Rogers Centre behind steady pitching and clutch hitting from Jorge Polanco.
The Blue Jays came out swinging early when George Springer blasted the very first pitch of the game from Seattle starter Bryce Miller into the left-field seats, igniting the sold-out Toronto crowd. But that would be the only spark the home team could muster, as the Mariners’ pitching staff stifled the Jays’ offense for the remainder of the night.

Toronto starter Kevin Gausman was sharp through five innings, holding Seattle hitless until the sixth when Cal Raleigh tied the game with a solo home run. After Gausman exited, Jorge Polanco broke the deadlock with an RBI single that scored Julio Rodríguez, then added another run-scoring hit in the eighth to seal the win.
The Blue Jays managed just two hits all evening — Springer’s homer and a late single by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. — as Seattle’s bullpen trio of Gabe Speier, Matt Brash, and Andrés Muñoz combined for three scoreless innings to close out the game.
Gausman took the loss despite allowing only three hits and two runs across 5⅔ innings. Miller earned the win for Seattle, pitching six strong innings with one run allowed and four strikeouts.
With the loss, Toronto trails the best-of-seven series 1–0, and will look to even things up in Game 2. Trey Yesavage is expected to start for the Blue Jays, while Logan Gilbert takes the mound for the Mariners.
