Blue Jays Even Series with 3-1 Win Over Orioles
TORONTO – The Toronto Blue Jays secured a 3-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday afternoon at Rogers Centre, concluding their season-opening four-game series with a split.
In the first inning, the Orioles took an early lead when Ryan O’Hearn scored on a wild pitch by Blue Jays starter Chris Bassitt. Toronto responded in the bottom half with a two-run single by George Springer, driving in Bo Bichette and Andres Gimenez.
Bassitt delivered a solid performance, pitching six innings and allowing one run on eight hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Relievers Brendon Little and Yariel Rodríguez each contributed a scoreless inning, and Jeff Hoffman closed the game with a clean ninth inning, earning his first save as a Blue Jay.
Offensively, catcher Tyler Heineman added a solo home run in the seventh inning, marking his second career homer and first since 2019.
Orioles starter Tomoyuki Sugano, making his major league debut after a distinguished career in Japan, allowed two runs on four hits and two walks over four innings before exiting due to a hand cramp.
The Blue Jays’ defense held the Orioles to 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position, highlighting Toronto’s effective pitching and fielding throughout the game.
With this win, both teams concluded the series with two victories each. The Blue Jays will host the Washington Nationals in a three-game series starting Monday night, while the Orioles return to Baltimore for their home opener against the Boston Red Sox.
