Blue Jays Blank Padres 3–0 Behind Bassitt’s Gem and Power Bats
Guerrero Jr. and Santander homer as Toronto opens series with shutout victory
TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays opened their three-game series against the San Diego Padres with a commanding 3–0 victory on Tuesday night at Rogers Centre. Chris Bassitt delivered six scoreless innings, and home runs from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Anthony Santander provided the offensive firepower needed to secure the win.
Guerrero Jr. initiated the scoring with a solo homer in the first inning, marking his sixth of the season and extending his on-base streak to 20 games. Santander extended the lead in the fifth with a two-run shot, also his sixth, bringing in Alejandro Kirk.
Bassitt (4–2) was dominant on the mound, allowing four hits, walking one, and striking out six over six innings. The bullpen trio of Brendon Little, Yariel Rodríguez, and Jeff Hoffman preserved the shutout, with Hoffman earning his 10th save in 12 opportunities.
The Padres’ starter, Dylan Cease (1–3), pitched seven innings, conceding three runs on three hits, with one walk and six strikeouts. Despite a solid outing, Cease has not recorded a win since April 2.
With this victory, the Blue Jays improve to 23–24, while the Padres drop to 27–19, extending their losing streak to four games. The series continues on Wednesday, with Toronto’s Kevin Gausman (3–4, 4.59 ERA) set to face San Diego’s Randy Vásquez (3–3, 3.45 ERA).
