Theatre Passe Muraille’s #BeyondTO Series Returns in 2026 With Two Boundary-Breaking International Works

The BeyondTO Series 2026 showcases international works exploring identity, culture, and the human body.

Toronto, ON — Theatre Passe Muraille (TPM) is preparing to bring global perspectives back to Toronto’s stages with the fourth edition of its acclaimed #BeyondTO Series, announcing two international productions set for early and mid-2026.

The 2026 program features Wayqeycuna by Argentine multidisciplinary artist Tiziano Cruz and Mark of a Woman by U.K.-based Deaf performance artist Chisato Minamimura — two works that examine culture, memory, embodiment, and the power of intergenerational storytelling through radically different performance languages.

TPM’s #BeyondTO Series is known for connecting Toronto audiences with formally innovative and globally recognized live works. The 2026 lineup continues that commitment through performance, visual language, and community engagement.

WAYQEYCUNA by Tiziano Cruz

January 24 & 25, 2026
In Spanish with English surtitles • Two performances

Making its Toronto appearance after premiering at the world-renowned Avignon Festival, Wayqeycuna (“Our Sisters”) closes Cruz’s celebrated trilogy Tres Maneras de Cantarle a una Montaña (Three Ways to Sing to a Mountain).

The work draws on Andean cultural practices — specifically the creation of quipus, knotted textile records — to interrogate how colonialism and neoliberal systems impact Indigenous identity, memory, and community ties.

Toronto audiences will recognize Cruz from his 2024 #BeyondTO presentation of Soliloquio, widely praised for its poetic and political intensity.

As part of his visit, Cruz will also lead a free community workshop, “Bread for the World,” on January 22. The session combines bread-making and cultural ritual as a way to honour ancestral memory.

MARK OF A WOMAN by Chisato Minamimura

May 22 & 23, 2026
Three performances • Performed in Visual Vernacular & ASL with voiceover and captions

Returning to TPM after her award-winning Scored in Silence opened the inaugural #BeyondTO in 2022, Minamimura’s latest work examines the cultural histories of women and tattooing around the world.

Mark of a Woman incorporates Visual Vernacular, kinetic projection, animation, and Woojer™ tactile technology to create multisensory storytelling accessible to Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing audiences alike.

Critics have praised the work for its emotional power and innovative approach to accessibility. British Theatre Guide called it “a lasting impression,” while other reviewers have highlighted its exploration of body politics, cultural inheritance, and the transformation of the body into a living archive.
