Argonauts Finalize Roster Ahead of Season Opener

Toronto releases key veterans, including Ka’Deem Carey, as they prepare to defend Grey Cup title

TORONTO — The Toronto Argonauts have made significant roster changes ahead of their 2025 CFL season opener against the Montreal Alouettes on Friday, June 6. Notably, veteran running back Ka’Deem Carey, a pivotal figure in last year’s Grey Cup victory, was among 18 players released during final cuts.

Carey, 32, led the team with 1,060 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in the 2024 season, earning a Divisional All-Star nod. He also contributed significantly in the postseason, including a touchdown in the Grey Cup win over Winnipeg.

Head Coach Ryan Dinwiddie expressed the difficulty of these decisions, stating, “I wish I could keep them all … it’s just unfortunate we’ve got to make some tough decisions, that’s professional football.”

In addition to Carey, the Argonauts released quarterback Cameron Dukes, who started nine games last season during Chad Kelly’s suspension, and veteran defensive back Ciante Evans.

The team has added several players to the practice roster, including running back Jyran Mitchell and receivers Calvin Turner Jr. and Dorian Anderson.

Toronto’s 2025 regular season kicks off on Friday, June 6, with an away game against the Montreal Alouettes.
